I've been composing music and designing sound professionally for nearly 30 years. Working primarily in live theatre, my work has been heard nationally and internationally.
Sound and music have always been a big part of my life – I started taking piano lessons when I was seven. Theory lessons led to composing at eight, and then clarinet in school at age nine and guitar lessons at ten.
My parents put more and more opportunities in front of me: school and church choirs, children’s theatre workshops. Since I could sing well, I always had my pick of parts, which was a great ego boost for someone in middle school. I felt like I belonged.
By the end of high school, most music I composed would remind people of a visual scene – “oh, you must have been thinking about [insert scene here] when you composed that”. I never was, I was just thinking about the music….but it became clear to me that I was good at making music that went with visual art.
Three years after high school I decided that I would stop fighting fate, and went to art college - majoring in classical piano performance. And that's how I got into a life devoted to music and sound for theatre.
